International Travel

ATF export requirements, US Customs procedures, country-by-country overview, and critical warnings for traveling internationally with firearms.

Critical Warning

International firearm laws are far more complex and dangerous than domestic laws. Many countries impose mandatory prison sentences for firearm possession — even for tourists who accidentally cross a border with a firearm. Research thoroughly and consult a legal expert before any international travel with a firearm.

US Export Requirements

ATF Form 4457

Complete before departure. Registers your firearm with US Customs so you can bring it back without import duties. File at your local CBP office.

Destination Country Permits

Most countries require advance import permits. This process can take weeks or months. Start planning early.

Airline Compliance

International flights follow the same TSA checked baggage rules as domestic flights, plus the destination country's import requirements.

Return to US

Declare the firearm to US Customs upon return. Your ATF Form 4457 proves prior ownership and avoids import duties.
